Greetings, Beacon Families!

This month we are focusing on the LIFESKILL of Problem SolvingProblem Solving means “to create solutions for difficult situations and everyday problems.”

Problem Solving doesn’t always involve the most complexed issues of life. Problem Solving might simply involve picking out clothes each day or deciding what to grab for breakfast. Students use Problem Solving when they resolve differences with siblings and friends and brainstorm ways to share and care for family belongings. Adults use Problem Solving when we call a plumber for leaky pipes or organize a car pool to get our children to and from school and sporting events.

We are a school of readers, so here are some books with great examples of Problem Solving.
Happy reading!

Just Juice (Rosa Guy)
Dragonwings (Lawrence Yep)

Ms. Kuhn and Mrs. Crosby's
 Kindergarten Class

You may have heard that we have 17 Lucky Ducks in our Kindergarten classroom…but it really is Mrs. Crosby and I who are the Lucky Ducks. Our students are a curious group of hands-on learners who LOVE to do science experiments, play math games with partners, write and illustrate stories in our publishing center, learn and use robust vocabulary words like alliteration and onomatopoeia, and read, read, read. In our room we also love to create immersion areas which show what we have learned. Our most recent immersion area included 50 penguins in the Antarctic. We had so much fun playing in this immersion area as we learned about the many different types of penguins, their habitat, and how they take care of their young. Our room is a happy place where learning magically happens.

Greetings, Beacon Families,

We had an awesome week at Bookman Road this week! We are so excited that the kindergarten Fill the Boot charity has concluded, and it looks like we collected around $230!  Thank you so much for helping our kindergarten students collect change to support our local Fire Station #4 on Spears Creek Church Road!

We would like to thank all of the BookMEN who came out on Friday to help us celebrate the 100th day of school. From dropping off students in the car rider line to eating lunch and reading with students, we are so appreciative that you took the time out to help us reach our goal of having 100 positive male role models actively involved with our students.

Enjoy your weekend, and remember "we are Beacons who 'light the way' in personal character, academics, and community service.

Dr. Hill, Principal

Random Acts of Kindness Week- February 12-16
February is a fun month to show others that we care about them! To join in on the February fun, we are observing National "Random Acts of Kindness Week”, February 12-16.  The current classroom counseling lesson for each class is about “Bucketfilling”, and showing kindness to others.  On February 12th we will begin creating a “Kindness Wall” on D-hallway, for students, teachers, and staff to share an example of an act of kindness they have given and an act of kindness they have received.  We’ll leave our Kindness Wall up throughout the remainder of February for everyone to enjoy.   Have fun filling buckets!  Check out this website with your child and pick out a few acts of kindness you might like to do together as a family!

To get into the spirit each day for “Kindness Week”, we will observe the following:   Monday, 2/12- “Say ‘Hi’ & Smile at Three People Day”, Tuesday, 2/13- “Hug or High-Five a Friend Day”, Wednesday, 2/14- “Write a Note of Encouragement Day”, Thursday, 2/15- Say Thank You to a Teacher, Seaside CafĂ© worker, Custodian, or Bus Driver Day”, Friday, 2/16- Wear Red (or Pink) for “Love Day”: & YOU get to pick the act of kindness today!
